Amberglen Retirement Village is an established retirement village and incorporates a well run Care Centre in Howick on the Karkloof Road about 1 km from the town. It is set on 35 ha of gently sloping land with park-like gardens.
430 cottages range from one bed garden flats to larger & spacious cottages with well developed gardens. They are owned under Sectional Title.
All the cottages are north facing - this makes for more comfortable year-round living.
The main centre, used for community activities, has a diningroom open daily for lunch, a large lounge, two rooms used for regular church services, meetings and events, a well stocked library which is open all day, a hairdressing salon and a snooker room with a full and a half sized table.
Planning is well advanced for the construction of a sanctuary which will be used for church services and other activities.
Amberglen has extensive common areas which are lawned and overlook a wetland & our dam, Laggan Waters with farmlands & the rolling hills of the Karkloof beyond.
A bird hide set in an indigenous copse overlooks the dam. 156 bird species have been noted and recorded within the Village.
The Village is secure and safe for residents to walk around any time of the day or night.
A 25m heated indoor swimming pool is open for year-round swimming. Independent instructors provide classes for aqua exercises or physiotherapy.
There are many activity and interest groups – a few of which are:
Bridge club
Garden club
Fishing club using our dam for trout and bass fishing
Snooker club
Needlework groups
Choir group
Art club for beginners and talented artists alike
Canasta & other card games
Low vision group presenting book readings & speakers of interest
& many other diverse groups. . .
An active social club presents many events & concerts to satisfy the diversity of interests. These include regular meetings with speakers and organisations from a wide variety of backgrounds.
The Liberty Mall shopping & cinema complex in Pietermaritzburg offers a weekly free bus service to residents of Amberglen.
Howick has two golf courses, two bowling greens and a tennis club for the more active. The University of the Third Age, Probus, Rotary & Lions Clubs are all very active and welcome new members.
